Considering the outcome size for the posters, we both agreed that A3 would be the ideal size. But also said that we could have a design that could be scaled to any size really, be it A5 or A1. Setting up the document then, we also decided to work to 8 columns with a 15mm margin around the edge.
The first (and one of our favourite) quote that we decided to try out was 'Why so serif?', originally being 'Why so serious?' from the second of the three Batman films.
Due to it having 'serif' within the quote, we immediately just thought that we should probably use a serif typeface, so we had a quick play with that (above). We're just not feeling that though. We have been in debates though whether to just use the typeface 'Gotham' for the posters as it couldn't be anymore ideal really seen as Batman is protecting the city of Gotham in the films. We had a quick look at that and we both really like it so have decided that this will be the consistent typeface throughout the poster series...
...although exactly how this will be used is still to be experimented with, as shown. Due to this particular quote being really short, we can't really get an ideal idea of how it works so have decided to move on to try out a different longer quote and will come back to this one.
The immediate thought is to have it centered, as shown. Although Baljeet really likes things to be left justified, so we gave this a try too.
We also added the original quote to the layouts too, as well as the film title from where this particular quote is from. Above on the left is the quote that we had changed it to in the first place, but after realising that it doesn't make much sense really we decided to revert the end part of it back to the original quote - seems a bit dramatic but quite funny at the same time. We're still not really feeling it at the moment though.
We have also wondered whether to also include which character it is that says the original quote on the poster to accompany which of the films they are from. As shown above, had a really quick experiment with this.
We then shifted things around slightly while experimenting. Just doesn't really feel right. It has already been discussed though about us getting some nice stock for these to be printed on, and using a grey stock was one of the options for this. So we decided to put a grey background on the posters for now to represent this.
We then experimented with the weights of the typeface and what not. We also talked about having a symbol on the posters as well that represents both Batman and Type, so for now we have decided to use the bat symbol until we develop the symbol later. Also, we're both not so keen on the left justified text now, so have decided to go back to experimenting with it being centered.
I had a quick experiment with trying out different weights of the typeface within the quote to highlight more the changes that have been made to them into being about type, and then also experimented with the shades of greys used for different parts.
Ended up back with a white background and then grey text, which consists of two different shades of grey. This is the one that we ended up liking the most so reckon we are going to stick with this. We've decided that we will look for a nice sexy white stock to print the posters on. We're still not feeling the bottom section too much though.
